The Pearls of Umhlanga Revisited

What a joy it was to return to The Pearls of Umhlanga for an updated commission of new photographic media for the marketing agents Wakefields. Structurally this is one of my favourite buildings in Durban and the challenge to capture it perfectly with added drama was something that I took to heart.

Since the last visit I have significantly upgraded my Canon Pro equipment and though it’s still the operator that needs to get the shot, this is a fine example that equipment does matter in photography. That beautifully pin-sharp wide angle Canon 17mm TS/E F4 lens on a full frame 5D Mark iii body was sensational to work with allowing me to keep the integrity of the architectural lines capturing a structure that has significant height for the Durban skyline. I was especially excited by the longer exposure shots with the night sky as the backdrop and the clouds streaking behind the towers.
