Waiting for the Light

Last week I had the pleasure of photographing a penthouse apartment within one of the housing blocks right on the Umdloti beach. This was in North Beach Road which is like a cliff face retreating out from the waves of the sea below. Thus the apartments really do feel as though they are ‘floating’ above the waves. This particular home is the residence of an interior design client of mine and her home has become a showcase of her work. I was amazed how there is such an amazing contrast of style in one apartment.

The weather was a cloudless day and an incredibly still afternoon but with this lack of late afternoon breeze came the haze that settled on the ocean and kind of gave the evening time a hint of grey dullness to it’s ambiance – thus not ideal to capture the beautiful sea views. I knew the only way to make the images of the outdoor entertaining area ‘work’ and really pop was to wait for the ‘right’ light. Wait for that perfect twilight where there’s possibly a 2 minute window of opportunity to get it right and there’s enough light exposed for the foreground elements and the background becomes this intense and awesome looking blue. Really think I got it here.

I’ll show 2 images of the same setting …. the first being the one captured at about sunset with plenty of ambient light to evenly show the scenario but as you can see the image is a rather dull looking setting. The next is shot about 30 minutes later – the sky is nearly black to the naked eye but somehow the camera’s sensor is grabbing all sorts of colours and light variations that it can over a period of 20 seconds at f9 (I use f9 for my interior photography as that’s where I’ve worked out that my lens is sharpest). Notice as well how the candlelight is starting to starbust. Love these dreamy colours. I’ve also included a few key shots from this shoot to show off some of the interiors.
