I could say that I have been involved with the progress of the Moses Mabhida Stadium since the beginning – I was commissioned to assist, photographically, with the tender of some world-class Durban architects for the design of the stadium. They did not win the tender but the design of the approved stadium was surrounded in controversy.
That aside, I have watched the development and ongoing structural progress of the stadium with much interest as I feel it as an incredible iconic element of the Durban skyline. I have been involved in a couple of photographic projects at the stadium since its completed state and the latest one was to photograph handles supplied on the majority of the doors within – a challenge to make the shots look interesting!
I’m always open to using an assignment shoot to get some memorable shots that would define the shoot. This time it wasn’t of the handles though. I had some fun with my fisheye lens and those arches – there was one shot, however, of a handle that was deadly in context! See the results below.
Awesome pics – the fisheye does some freaky distortions of the arches. The hole in the stadium roof actually looks like a fish too – the arch is the spine and the tail is where the arches spilt apart. Very fishy…
Those are some amazing photos with some unique angles, well done Grant.
Thanks Wade. I am really enjoying the different perspective and extra angle of view that fisheye lens is providing me.
Amazing photos Grant, nice to show the Irwins (my employers) the stadium to – they were very impressed!
Brilliant photos Grant of a brilliant stadium!
